Keep Driving’s perfectly annoying hitchhikers are a game-design master class

Image
On my second run through Keep Driving — a wonderful, turn-based, pixel-art game about taking long road trips as an aimless youth in the early 2000s — I picked up a hitchhiker called The Hurricane. This young woman was attractive and cool, much cooler than me. But she was also kind of annoying. She kept filling up the precious inventory space in my car’s trunk and the well behind the front seats with useless trash: used toilet rolls, packs of cigarettes with only one smoke left in them, spilled coffee cups. And she really wanted to party, which ended up getting me into terrible trouble. When we award the Polygon Recommends badge, it’s because we believe the recipient is uniquely thought-provoking, entertaining, inventive, or fun — and worth fitting into your schedule. If you want curated lists of our favorite media, check out What to Play and What to Watch . Before I tell you about that, let me tell you how hitchhikers work in Keep Driving . They have unique skills, which c...

Pokémon Go is reportedly for sale and the price tag is huge

Image
In 2016, Pokémon Go was the biggest video game on the planet, breaking software download records and sending local news into hysterics. Nine years and many less popular games later, developer Niantic Inc. is preparing to sell its games division to Saudia Arabia-owned Scopely Inc., according to a report by Bloomberg . How much does one of the most popular video games in history cost? The report claims the price tag for the division is an eye-watering $3.5 billion. Niantic has been contacted for comment. Pokemon Go ’s sale would be the latest twist in the tale of one of gaming’s most unlikely CEOs. In 2001, John Hanke co-founded a mapping technology company called Keyhole that would later be acquired by Google and be foundational in the development of Google Earth and Google Maps. In 2010, Hanke, riding rarified success, chose to lead a team inside Google that would envision the future of augmented reality gaming. The team launched Ingress , the first major global augmented reality ...

Magic’s first batch of Final Fantasy cards are here, and they look amazing

Image
It’s a year of change for Magic: The Gathering in 2025, as the beloved brand makes a seismic shift in how it delivers its unique narrative beats to its most devoted fans. There will only be three Magic Multiverse-themed sets each year going forward, down from four. Filling the gap is the wildly popular Universes Beyond initiative, which will get three sets of its own for a total of six each year. Best of all is the fact that publisher Wizards of the Coast is coming out swinging with an entire set inspired by Final Fantasy . Titled Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy , according to a news release it will include “the largest collection of Final Fantasy artwork ever in a single game, drawing from across the franchise.” That means everyone from a fan who cut their teeth on the Super Nintendo to folks grinding away today at Final Fantasy 14 should be able to find something that they recognize. For fans of Magic gameplay, this Standard-legal set features some interesting new mech...

Pokémon Go ‘Dual Destiny’ Special Research Tasks and rewards

Image
Pokémon Go ’s “Dual Destiny” season has begun, lasting from Dec. 3, 2024, until March 4, 2025. This means that there’s a new set of Special Research to complete, though all the steps won’t be immediately available. The steps will likely be themed around different events that occur during the season, so while you may only be able to do a few now, the rest will unlock later. To unlock this research, you just need to login during the season. Once it’s started, you’ll have an unlimited amount of time to finish it — even after the season ends in March. The “Dual Destiny” season has shifted spawns, added new Pokémon to find in Max Battles , and changed research breakthroughs as well (though, yes, Furfrou is still in the pool). Steps one and two of the “Dual Destiny” research was added as part of the “ Not My Cup of Tea ” event, alongside the release of Sinistea . Steps three and four were added as part of the “ Holiday Part 2 ” event, while steps five to eight were added between the e...

‘A New Age Begins’ for Critical Role. Let’s hope it’s one for actual play and TTRPGs, too

Image
How you feel about the finale of Critical Role ’s third main campaign hinges a lot on what you think Critical Role — and actual play, and maybe even TTRPGs — is about. Is it an extended worldbuilding exercise? Is it a story told? Is it a game played? Is it just… content made by your parasocial faves? [ Ed. note: This story contains spoilers for episode 121 of Critical Role ’s Campaign 3, “A New Age Begins.” The video on demand is now available on YouTube , with audio-only podcast available on Thursday, Feb. 13.] If the measure of a good ending in actual play is the satisfaction of the players at the table, Critical Role ended with great success. Matthew Mercer’s table has always been, at its heart, a love letter to its players, and he has always insisted that they are the first and only audience he thinks about. Mercer ends every campaign with freeform epilogues that allow players control over the afterlives of their characters. And so if your pleasure is intimately tied to that ...

Can Inkay be shiny in Pokémon Go?

Image
Inkay , the revolving Pokémon from Kalos, can be found in the wild in Pokémon Go . Yes, Inkay can be shiny in Pokémon Go ! While neither of this Pokémon have use in PvP content, Malamar is actually used in both Great and Ultra League PvP, so it may be worth grabbing some with decent IVs to use. Inkay is mostly known for its wackadoodle evolution method , where you need to hold your phone upside down. Yeah. I mean, I get that it makes sense because a Malamar is an elongated upside-down Inkay, but still. Come on. What is the shiny rate for Inkay in Pokémon Go? As per old research by the now-defunct website The Silph Road (via Wayback Machine ), the shiny rate for Pokémon on a regular day is approximately one in 500. Inkay is not a confirmed Pokémon that gets a “permaboost” (meaning that it’s a rare spawn and thus gets a boosted shiny rate). What can I do to attract more shiny Pokémon? Not much, unfortunately. It appears to be random chance. Shiny Pokémon catch rates are set by d...

Monster Hunter Wilds collaboration coming to Monster Hunter Now, including new monster

Image
Capcom and Niantic’s augmented reality game Monster Hunter Now is to receive a Monster Hunter Wilds -themed update tied to that game’s release date of Feb. 28. The headline is the addition of monster Chatacabra, a large-tongued amphibian familiar to those who have sampled the Monster Hunter Wilds beta , with its own armor set to unlock and farm. Alongside Chatacabra will also be several layered cosmetics inspired by Wilds , including a blow-up version of the Seikret mount and the game’s opening “Hope” armor set, alongside “Hope” versions of the game’s many weapons. Elsewhere, Niantic also confirmed details of the next season for Monster Hunter Now , which is rolling out March 6. Titled “The Blossoming Blade,” it introduces Glavenus (first introduced in Monster Hunter Generations ) and Arzuros (from Monster Hunter Portable 3rd ) to the monster pool, ahead of a yet-to-be-announced monster subspecies on April 4 and a new Elder Dragon on May 5. Though it will be the first season w...

Avowed, new Yakuza, and more new games out this week

Image
The new game releases this week are bold. Obsidian’s massive RPG Avowed launches for everyone early in the week and is followed up by the first part of Lost Records: Bloom & Rage and Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii . All three of them veer away from what their developers have previously done, in some impressive and bizarre ways. Outside the big hitters, the other games this week are no less bold in their own ways. Tiny Pasture fulfills everyone’s dream to have a farm full of bunnies on their screen at all times, and TactiCats is a multiplayer game where you get to be a mischievous little kitten. And while it’s not a new game release, Blizzard is upending everything you thought you knew about Overwatch 2 with a new perks system launching with its newest season at the beginning of the week. Here are our most anticipated game releases for the week of Feb. 17. Big game updates to watch out for On Feb. 18, Overwatch 2 will shake the entire game up with a new perks ...

Movie textures have gone too far

Image
A lot of things about Captain America: Brave New World didn’t work. But I can’t stop thinking about one thing that worked too well: the movie’s CG textures.  Specifically, I’m talking about the lovingly rendered detail on Red Hulk , the alter ego of — spoiler warning for those who didn’t see it in the trailer — Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, as played by Harrison Ford. More specifically, I’m talking about Red Hulk’s chest .  There’s just… so much to it. Every wiry chest hair, every fold of his skin, every tiny goosefleshy bump on his round red nipples. I swear, I wasn’t planning to gawk at his nipples, but all of that just jumped right out at me. Even though I’m sure I was supposed to be paying attention to Red Hulk smashing his way through the White House Rose Garden, all I could think was CHEST.  Red Hulk’s intricately designed, visceral torso wasn’t the only overly textured body part in the movie. I could trace each wriggle of Samuel Sterns’ bulging, gamma-mutated...

The best way to beat a hard level is to stop playing it

Image
The cycle of pushing beyond a difficult level or boss is probably familiar to most everyone: You fail a lot, over and over. Eventually, you decide it’s not happening and you step away. When you return to the game, you breeze past what once felt insurmountable in a try or two. The reason this experience is so universal? It’s encoded in the way our brains learn. “Playing a video game requires some mental energy so to speak (i.e. attention resources), which inevitably depletes over time,” Celia Hodent, Ph.D. in psychology and game UX strategist, told Polygon via email. “When you’ve already been playing a game for [one] hour and are starting to battle a new boss, you put a lot of cognitive effort into understanding how the enemy works and how to defeat it, which is draining your energy and you keep dying.” But when you sleep on it, not only do you recuperate that spent energy — you also allow your brain to complete an imperative part of the process of learning a new skill. “Sleep he...

Every MCU movie, ranked

Image
The Marvel Cinematic Universe hits movie number 35 with Captain America: Brave New World , a direct sequel to 2008’s The Incredible Hulk and to the Disney Plus series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier , though it also takes a major plot point from The Eternals as an inciting incident, in addition to following on from important events in Avengers: Endgame . That’s a lot of homework for one action movie, which speaks to where the MCU is these days: It’s a huge project, crowded with characters, lore, and enough assigned reading  to deter casual fans from dropping by to see the latest installment. But that’s the problem with making Cinematic Universe installments rather than movies. Marvel’s early profits had studios across America and around the world jumping on the “movie universe” concept, but the majority of those universes petered out quickly , leaving Marvel to carry on nearly alone. And no wonder: Marvel’s was planned better and executed more carefully from the start. ...
