Canyon Layer Banandium Gem locations in Donkey Kong Bananza

In Donkey Kong Bananza , the Canyon Layer is the third layer that you’ll crash land onto. Can a game about a pixelated cat change the drug education narrative?

Substance abuse education in the United States has long been regarded as corny, at best. (Think: D.A.R.E.) But LA-based nonprofit End Overdose is trying to make the field relatable through a browser game called Narcat's World, a point-and-click adventure that teaches players how to respond to opiate overdoses and save lives by administering Narcan. source https://www.polygon.com/gaming/617694/narcats-world-harm-reduction-drug-education-how-to-play/

Nintendo Direct’s best reveal was a real blink and you miss it moment

This morning, we got a clearer picture of the Nintendo Switch 2’s third-party future thanks to a new Partner Direct stream . Between announcements of ports, the show brought a few big reveals, from Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection to Octopath Traveler 0 . But it was one quick announcement that caught my eye (literally) the most: Goodnight Universe launches on November 11 for Nintendo Switch 2, alongside Windows PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. source https://www.polygon.com/goodnight-universe-before-your-eyes-nintendo-switch-2-direct-announcement/

I have nothing negative to say about Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, other than that it ends too soon

Image
Tecmo’s Ninja Gaiden games are infamous for their difficulty, from the NES era trilogy of punishing side-scrolling action platformers to the modern Team Ninja games. The latest entry in that franchise, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound , doesn’t strive to be that hard; instead, it focuses on offering a compelling set of combat tools, tight platforming and action, and a strong case for the Ninja Gaiden series to continue in 2D. It’s a perfect entry point for new fans of Ninja Gaiden and a must-play for fans of 2D platforming action. Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound stars Kenji Mozu, an apprentice of series star Ryu Hayabusa and a member of the Hayabusa village ninja clan. While Ryu is off adventuring in America, Kenji’s village is attacked by demons with designs on world domination by bringing their demon lord to power over humanity.  Kenji is a capable ninja on his own; he can dispatch most enemies with a slash of his katana, and overcome dangers and reach great heights using a somersault move c...

D&D returns to its one of its earliest settings by kicking off an organized play campaign at Gen Con

Image
Dungeons & Dragons is kicking off a new organized play campaign at Gen Con this weekend that goes back to the earliest days of the 50-year-old tabletop role-playing game. Legends of Greyhawk promises players “less rules, more fun” as they adventure through the world designed by D&D co-creator Gary Gygax, which was revived for the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide . Numerous adventures set in different parts of Greyhawk are running during North America’s largest gaming convention, which was founded by Gygax in 1967. Players all start at level 1 and will reach level 3 after playing at least three adventures. Players only need to use the free D&D Beyond Basic Rules to get started, though D&D Beyond account holders will receive special perks like tradeable magic item cards. Legends of Greyhawk will run at several other conventions this year before being made widely available for organized play in 2026. Decisions players make in these early adventures will shape the fu...

Gigantamax Butterfree counters, weakness, and battle tips in Pokémon Go

Image
Gigantamax Butterfree is the latest addition to the list of Gigantamax Pokémon introduced to Pokémon Go , and is available in Max Battles as part of the Gigantamax Butterfree Max Battle Day on Aug. 3 from 2-5 p.m. in your local time. This big bug will only have niche uses (as is the way for bug-type Pokémon), but if you like to collect Gigantamax Pokémon, you’ll want one for your collection regardless. Below, we list out some general Gigantamax Max Battle tips and counters for Gigantamax Butterfree in Pokémon Go . Gigantamax Butterfree weakness Gigantamax Butterfree has a ton of weaknesses : flying-, rock-, fire-, electric, and ice-type moves. On top of that, Butterfree actually has doubled weakness against rock-type moves, though we won’t be able to make much use of that yet. You’ll want to avoid using ground-, fighting-, bug-, and grass-type moves, as Butterfree has a resistance against those types. Gigantamax Butterfree best counters With the above in mind, there’s a go...

A new Nintendo Direct is coming on July 31

Image
Nintendo will broadcast a new Nintendo Direct presentation on Thursday, July 31, the company has confirmed . July’s Nintendo Direct showcase will focus not on games published by Nintendo itself, but on third-party partners. Thursday’s Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase will run for roughly 25 minutes and will start at 9 a.m. EDT/6 a.m. PDT. The showcase will stream on Nintendo’s  YouTube  and  Twitch  channels. Nintendo says that the next Direct will highlight upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch games from its publishing partners. That could mean appearances from games like Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition for Switch 2, Star Wars Outlaws for Switch 2, Hades 2 , Professor Layton and the New World of Steam , and — dare I say it — Hollow Knight: Silksong . It seems we’ll have to wait a little longer for updates on Nintendo’s first-party offerings still to come in 2025, which include Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Kirby Air Riders for Switch 2. source...

Fantastic Four: First Steps has an Eternals problem in Doctor Doom

Image
Before Marvel Studios’ widely derided movie Eternals hit theaters, it faced a range of challenges. It came shortly after 2019’s massive Phase 3 climax Avengers: Endgame , and before the Marvel Cinematic Universe defined or built a meaningful hook into Phase 4. Eternals ’ release was delayed by COVID, and affected by critically low post-COVID theater attendance . It centers on comparatively obscure characters who weren’t interacting with any previous MCU superheroes or plotlines. And it’s dour, self-important, and stiff compared to the best MCU movies. Still, once the Marvel faithful saw it, another concern trumped those previous ones, and came to define the Eternals conversation. Fans kept asking, “Where the hell were all of these supposed planetary-protectors during Endgame , or Avengers: Age of Ultron , or any of the other world-threatening crises that stood to interfere with their supposed core mission?” The latest MCU movie, Fantastic Four: First Steps , has a much smaller ver...

Bad Guys 3 could double down on Bad Guys 2’s Elon Musk parody, director says

Image
When The Bad Guys 2 , the sequel to DreamWorks’ hyperkinetic, stylish 2022 animated heist picture The Bad Guys , hits theaters on Aug. 1, adult viewers will immediately make a connection that goes over most kids’ heads. Once again, the stars of the film — drawn from Aaron Blabley’s bestselling illustrated children’s series — are Mr. Wolf (Sam Rockwell), Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson), Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos), and Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina), a team of criminal masterminds who rehabilitated themselves in the first movie, only to return to crime for One Last Heist. But this time, their target is Elon Musk. He isn’t called that, of course. But Mr. Moon (voiced by Colin Jost) is immediately recognizable as an Elon Musk parody. An eccentric tech billionaire who owns his own private space exploration company (Moon X, inspired by Musk’s SpaceX ), Mr. Moon is powerful, vain, dorky, and only interested in talking to people with a great deal of money. He’s also ...

How to reduce your Madness in Wuchang Fallen Feathers

Image
As it is in many Soulslikes, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers expects you to die multiple times, but it brings the Madness system to make all the effort pay off in one way or another. Madness can make you stronger, but at the expense of raising the difficulty bar of already hard encounters. That’s why learning how Madness affects the game and how to respond to it is fundamental to enjoying and progressing in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers . There might be moments where you want to take advantage of the power you gain, or situations you’d rather play safe.  In this Wuchang: Fallen Feathers guide, we explain how the Madness system works and how to reduce your Madness level so you can learn how to prepare and customize your character for each encounter in the game. How the Madness system works in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers In Wuchang: Fallen Feathers , the main character has an inner demon that grows stronger depending on how much Madness you have. In practical terms, Madness is a gauge t...

The first great Switch 2 mouse game might be a revived 33-year-old classic

Image
The Nintendo Switch 2’ s new features include Joy-Cons that can become a mouse. I’ve personally been wondering which game will allow us to take full advantage of mouse controls, and now I know: Mario Paint . If you’ve been looking for an excuse to get artsy, then this 33-year-old classic game, now available for Nintendo Switch Online members as part of the July game updates, might be just the thing you’re looking for. The classic title was initially released in 1992 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System ( SNES ). An entertaining game that lets artistic inclinations shine, you could draw all sorts of pictures and color them in with the game’s drawing tools. Mario Paint isn’t all about that still-life, however. If you’re someone who enjoys creating animated sequences and music for your creations, you’ll be able to do that too. Gamers will also be able to take full advantage of Mario Paint’s various modes. There’s the Breakroom, which gives players the power of a fly sw...

Wuchang makes the same mistake as Stellar Blade

Image
Once again, the discourse around a promising action game has been hijacked not by its gameplay, music, or setting, but by debates over its main character’s appearance. Following the July 24 release of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, Soulslike players rejoiced at the arrival of yet another competent action game to join the repertoire. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers may not rival genre greats like Lies of P (or, well, most of the FromSoftware catalog), but it is mechanically sound. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has an interesting setting, it tries to do something different with the Soulslike formula through unique mechanics, and it even has a decent implementation of a skill tree for Soulslike progression. But the discussion online isn’t about the game’s bona fides. No, instead, fans and detractors both have dedicated their energies to arguing about Bai Wuchang, the conventionally attractive protagonist of Fallen Feathers . The small but vocal contingents of the “this game is goonerslop” cr...

Can Roggenrola be shiny in Pokémon Go?

Image
Roggenrola , the mantle Pokémon from Unova, can be found in the wild in Pokémon Go . Yes, Roggenrola can be shiny in Pokémon Go ! Roggenrola’s shiny debuted during its very own Roggenrola Community Day in September 2022. Gigalith is a pretty decent rock-type attacker, but it has become massively outclassed since its Community Day. You’re better off with Rhyperior, Rampardos, Tyrantrum, or Terrakion (if you have them). What is the shiny rate for Roggenrola in Pokémon Go? As per old research by the now-defunct website The Silph Road (via  Wayback Machine ), the shiny rate for Pokémon on a regular day is approximately one in 500. Roggenrola is not a confirmed Pokémon that gets a “permaboost” (meaning that it’s a rare spawn and thus gets a boosted shiny rate). What can I do to attract more shiny Pokémon? Not much, unfortunately. It appears to be random chance. Shiny Pokémon catch rates are set by developer Niantic, and they are typically only boosted during special events lik...

The Fantastic Four are selfish parents — but that isn’t the movie’s main problem

Image
The stakes of the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe installment, The Fantastic Four: First Steps , involve the familial superteam figuring out how to save the Earth by defeating the godlike adversary Galactus (now available in non- cloud form ) — an expected development for a superhero movie. What audiences may not be expecting, however, is the Star Trek-like moral dilemma powering the movie’s second half, forcing its do-gooders to question whether it’s worth involuntarily trading one life for billions of others. By posing this dilemma, First Steps accidentally calls into question whether the MCU has the emotional nuance necessary to treat family as a present-tense condition, in all its glories and setbacks, rather than as past-tense backstory. If Marvel is going to make its most family-forward superteam a cornerstone of its on-screen universe, it should take the opportunity to explore the new storytelling avenues that a family of superheroes offers. [ Ed. note: Spoilers ahead for ...

Donkey Kong Bananza’s identity crisis doesn’t get in the way of good time

Image
I’m not surprised smashing stuff in Donkey Kong Bananza is enjoyable. In the tutorial alone, I, like many others , spent ages demolishing everything I could get my (giant gorilla) hands on, and it’s a given that something designed well enough to distract from the main attraction like that is still going to feel good 10 or 20 hours later. What surprised me about Bananza isn’t even how much Nintendo struggled to fit the usual trappings of a 3D platformer into a game about punching, to the point that its other features never get the chance to feel fully developed. What I didn’t expect was that, even when you’re staring these limitations in the face and can feel Nintendo making compromises in puzzle and challenge design, it rarely takes away from just how much fun Bananza is. Plain and simple: Donkey Kong Bananza is a blast, even at its weakest points. It seems like a bit of a mess initially, though, like a mismatched set of ideas stitched together and set loose, but the fantastical...

Elden Ring Nightreign needs a better way to let me thank my buddies (or apologize to them)

Image
During a recent successful expedition in Elden Ring Nightreign , wherein my fellow Nightfarers and I took down the Everdark Sovereign version of Adel Baron of Night, I had a realization: FromSoftware isn’t giving me enough space to properly thank my fellow Limveld adventurers. (Or to say sorry to them, if necessary.) And “Vic,” a Raider who dealt the killing blow to Adel, deserved ample thanks. He’d dispatched the Baron of Night solo, while an Ironeye and I laid on the ground, near-death on our bellies, whipped by the winds of Adel’s vortex, acting as a two-person audience to Vic’s patience and prowess in combat. After Vic had cracked the Gaping Jaw wide open with his giant hammer, Ironeye and I rose to our feet, we dusted ourselves off, and I quickly whipped out my Prattling Pete to say a raspy “Thank you.” Vic did a little dance, I did a little bow, but we only had mere seconds to express our gratitude for each other. This scant downtime after an expedition needs to be fixed, now...
