Where is Tophat Gudetama this week in Hello Kitty Island Adventure?

Image
Tophat Gudetama hides in a different spot in Hello Kitty Island Adventure every week, with new weeks beginning on Monday. Pochacco will task you with finding this dapper Gudetama specifically as part of a quest per week for the first two weeks (“The Laziest Egg” and “The Laziest Eggs”), though after you finish these, there won’t be a quest to remind you about Tophat Gudetama in your list anymore. Pochacco will still remind you to find him at the start of the week, though. Once you find him, you just need to use your camera to take a photo of him, as you do with the other hidden Gudetamas around the island. The lazy (but fancy) egg can hide in one of 52 spots and with the map being so huge, he can be hard to find if you don’t know where to look. Below we explain where to find Tophat Gudetama in Hello Kitty Island Adventure this week. Where is Tophat Gudetama this week? For the week of March 31 , Tophat Gudetama is south of the entrance to Icy Peak, on Gemstone Mountain. You’...

Doom: The Dark Ages could be the weird sequel the series needs

Image
Following Doom’s revelatory reboot in 2016 and its bigger but not necessarily better sequel in 2020, Doom: The Dark Ages is doing exactly what it needs to do: getting focused, and getting a li’l weird with it. With its dramatic shift in setting and its emphasis on toe-to-toe demon punchouts, it looks like a hard left turn for the series. But after my time with the demo build at a recent in-person preview event, I believe The Dark Ages ’ additions to the Doom 2016 formula are thematically and mechanically cohesive, and moreover, they’re really goddamn fun. Doom (2016) was an exercise in mechanical purity. It weaved effortlessly between frantic arena combat and environmental exploration, just like its 1993 namesake. Its big addition to the formula was the Glory Kill, a melee finisher that essentially turned wounded enemies into health packs, encouraging you to always stay in the fight. The game succeeded on its propellant combat design, but lost some steam in the back half, by whi...

Lazarus is so stylish, I don’t need to care about its mystery

Image
Lazarus , the new anime from the legendary Shinichirō Watanabe , has a lot on its mind. There are scientific marvels, explosive action sequences, and a mind-spinning mystery that’s only just begun to be mined. But even better than all that? A show that looks and feels so good, so evocative in its designs, that nothing else matters. A new project from Watanabe is always exciting, but the lineup behind Lazarus is special, even within that context. In addition to Watanabe and animation from MAPPA ( Jujutsu Kaisen , Chainsaw Man ), Lazarus promised big things with the names on the score (jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington, English DJs Bonobo and Floating Points) and designing the action ( John Wick mastermind Chad Stahelski ). Through the first few episodes, Lazarus mostly lives up to that promise, with vibrant animation, terrific vehicular and architectural design, a varied, energetic score with jazzy and electronic influences alike, and a satisfying meld between Stahelski’s fluid,...

Netflix’s hidden action-comedy gem The Man Who Feels No Pain delivers on all fronts

Image
I haven’t watched Novocaine yet, but I’m looking forward to it. The action comedy about a man who doesn’t feel pain and looks to save his co-worker from a hostage situation has been described to me as “what if the Crank movies were romantic comedies,” which sounds exactly up my alley. My wait for the movie to come to home viewing was a great excuse to watch a similar movie that’s been on my Netflix queue for years — the 2018 Hindi action comedy The Man Who Feels No Pain , listed on Netflix under the Hindi title Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota .  As the title suggests, the movie has a similar premise to Novocaine : A young man with congenital insensitivity to pain has to fight for what he loves. But while Novocaine focuses more singularly on that conflict (in that case, a hostage situation), The Man Who Feels No Pain is also interested in what it means for a child to grow up with this condition, and what it means for a parent to raise a child who doesn’t always feel the consequences of ...

Would it be so bad if Severance was like Lost?

Image
As the second season of Severance aired, relief filled the air — the beloved sci-fi workplace satire was finally, finally back. But as the weeks ticked by, the sentiments of some longtime watchers began to sour. Disappointment and wariness dispersed across social media, as many viewers felt that the show wasn’t measuring up with the long-cultivated hype.  This is one of the inevitabilities of our current state of streaming. Short seasons take years to be filmed and aired, leaving huge hiatuses in between. These hiatuses are vacuums, which fandoms naturally abhor. They fill up quickly with speculation and expectation, building up the long-awaited return to a level so lofty that pretty much no new season, no matter how good, can fulfill it.  Severance ’s hiatus was extended unduly by the 2023 actors’ and writers’ strikes in Hollywood that landed squarely during its production schedule, so the hype had even more time to build than usual. When Severance finally returned, it...

Playing Nintendo’s greatest triumph on its biggest failure

Image
Eiji Aonuma and Shigeru Miyamoto promote Zelda: Breath of the Wild at E3 2016. | Photo: Nintendo As Shigeru Miyamoto never actually said , “A delayed game is eventually good, but a bad game is forever bad.” This sliding-doors concept gains an additional, poignant dimension when considering The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild , because that game’s delay affected more than its quality. Originally planned for release in 2015 as a Wii U exclusive, Breath of the Wild ’s shift to early 2017 moved it onto the launch lineup for the Nintendo Switch. It went from propping up a failed console to becoming the game that defined the Switch , and redefined Nintendo, for a whole new era. That halo has made it easy to forget that the Wii U version of Breath of the Wild was actually released. Not for the first time, Nintendo chose a Zelda game to play the dual role of swan song for one generation and curtain-raiser for another (appropriately for the Zelda series, with its preoccupation with the...

Giratina ex just fixed going first in Pokémon TCG Pocket

Image
Going first in  Pokémon TCG Pocket sucks. You can’t equip any energy (unless you happen to have Misty). You can’t evolve. You kind of just put a Pokémon in the active spot and hope that your opponent doesn’t wallop you too hard on the second turn. It’s pretty rough — that is, until Giratina ex showed up to alleviate your woes. Introduced in the Shining Revelry expansion, the new Giratina ex card appears to have an ability that is specifically tailored for people who go first. As far as new cards go, Giratina ex is one of the more interesting Pokémon added in the recent expansion. So here is why  Giratina ex decks  could become one of the stronger decks at the moment in  Pokémon TCG Pocket . Why use a Giratina ex deck in Pokémon TCG Pocket Giratina ex is a basic psychic-type Pokémon that has 150 HP and a retreat cost of two. Its ability, Broken-Space Bellow, allows you to take attach a bonus psychic energy to Giratina ex. Once you use this ability, though,...

John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness is an underseen and essential masterpiece

Image
I don’t think we give John Carpenter enough credit. That might sound hyperbolic, given that we’re talking about the creator of one the most enduring cinematic horror franchises of all time, but it’s true. He’s more than just the mastermind behind Halloween ; he’s a renaissance man, at once the director of such touchstones as The Thing, They Live , and Escape from New York and an accomplished, self-taught composer. Not to mention a passionate gamer , no-nonsense straight-talker , and overall jovial elder statesman of horror cinema . Any of these reasons alone would suffice for why you should make time to watch Prince of Darkness before it leaves Prime Video on April 1. But an even better reason is the fact that it’s too often given short shrift when compared to the other masterpieces in Carpenter’s oeuvre. Written by Carpenter himself under the pseudonym of “Martin Quatermass,” Prince of Darkness centers on a group of quantum physics students who have been enlisted by their prof...

Atomfall is an achievement in cutting to the chase

Image
Forget the number of hours it takes for a game to “get good” — how am I spending the first 15 minutes ?  Call me impatient, but a game’s opening seconds, even those introductory moments as a character comes alive or a world opens up, are make-or-break for how far I am willing to soldier on into what could be 20, 30, or 100 hours of play. So what a relief it was to fire up Atomfall , the new stealth-driven survival adventure from Sniper Elite developer Rebellion now on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox (via Game Pass), and feel immediately dunked into its radioactive mystery.  Atomfall takes place in an alt-universe patch of northwestern England where a nuclear disaster has left buildings crumbled and society torn apart. There are paramilitaries operating walled-off towns and pagan cults stalking the open fields. A dash of retrofuture machinery gives the backdrop a Fallout flavor ( intentional ), while the mannerisms and encounters are delightfully British (“press X to pour tea”)....

The best sci-fi and fantasy books to read this April

Image
Spring is finally here, and with it, some warmer weather. While many of you will take this as an opportunity to get outside more and see your loved ones, I see this as the prime season for curling up in a sunbeam or sprawling on a picnic blanket with a good book. The real challenge is in picking what book.  Keeping up with the literary release schedule is tough enough, let alone sifting through all the titles to find ones that not only sound interesting, but will actually be good. If you’re looking for some of the best new sci-fi and fantasy books being released this April, I picked out a few that will appeal to a variety of tastes, whether you’re seeking an epic fantasy, a clever mystery, a philosophical road trip, or something completely different.  I’ve been lucky enough to get advance copies of a few of these, while others I plan to devour as soon as they hit shelves. See the best sci-fi and fantasy book releases coming up in April below! Other notable April releases ...

Nintendo suggests there will be enhanced Switch 2 versions of some Switch games

Image
In the small print of an explainer about its new Virtual Game Card system for digital purchases, Nintendo appeared to confirm that some Switch games will get enhanced versions for Switch 2 — or at any rate, versions native to the Switch 2 console. A footnote to the article reads, “Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games can only be loaded on a Nintendo Switch 2 system.” The note also implies that the Switch 2 will use the Virtual Game Card system as well, and will be able to exchange Switch 1 games with an original Switch. The Switch 2 is confirmed to be fully backward compatible with its predecessor’s software, so it will be able to play ( almost ) any Switch game regardless. But Nintendo’s mention of “Switch 2 Edition games,” as opposed to “Switch 2 exclusive games,” suggests that some Switch games will get cross-gen versions that run natively on Switch 2 rather than through the backward-compatibility layer. This opens the door to enhanced version...

MLB The Show does co-op better than its sports game competitors

Image
Modern AAA sports games have been overrun by card-collecting modes. The explosive popularity (and profitability) of EA Sports FC’s Ultimate Team has compelled most of the other major sports game franchises to imitate it — each EA title has its own Ultimate Team mode, the NBA 2K franchise has MyTeam, and MLB The Show has Diamond Dynasty. Beyond the predatory microtransactions that are ever present in some of these games, these card-collecting modes can make it feel like the genre is running away from its roots: having fun playing virtual sports with your friends. Most of these modes try to awkwardly shoehorn in a way to play cooperatively in an attempt to overcome this, but only MLB The Show is able to deliver on an actually fun co-op experience.  Diamond Dynasty’s ranked co-op is simple. Before games, each player chooses three hitters, one starting pitcher, and two relievers from their individual Diamond Dynasty roster to add to a collective roster that both players build toget...

Orb: On the Movements of the Earth is an anime that makes knowledge exciting

Image
Though on the surface they seem to have next to nothing in common, I couldn’t help but think of Rogue One and Andor while watching Orb: On the Movements of the Earth , the latest anime by Hunter x Hunter and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End studio Madhouse. Specifically, it was Luthen’s speech in Andor when he says, “I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I’ll never see,” that kept coming to mind. Though one is set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away and the other in a fictionalized version of 15th century Poland, you could swap the Death Star plans in that one hallway scene in Rogue One for an even vaguer and more abstract concept — the theory of heliocentrism — and you get at the core of this poignant, emotionally devastating, thought-provoking, inspirational anime.  Orb: On the Movements of the Earth is based on the manga of the same name by Uoto. It takes place at a time when knowledge is dangerous, and the Church’s Inquisition hunts down and punishes anyone d...

Marvel Rivals gave Venom a twerk emote

Image
NetEase is giving Marvel Rivals fans what they want: a twerk emote for Venom, the team-based multiplayer shooter’s most caked-up anti-hero. The existence of Venom’s booty-popping animation comes courtesy of prolific Marvel Rivals leaker RivalsInfo . While Venom’s throwing-it-back emote is not publicly available yet, its arrival appears imminent and may be released officially with Thursday’s patch . Truly, one can almost hear the klaxon of this dumptruck ass backing up, it feels so achingly close. The inclusion of the twerk emote is an acknowledgement from Marvel Games and NetEase that Marvel Rivals fans can’t get enough of Venom’s meaty cheeks, and that the game’s makers can thereby profit from it. That color scheme is part of a new pick-up bundle for Marvel Ri...
